She Sends #3
Happy Mother’s Day! I’m posting scanned copies of all the old issues of She Sends (the magazine for women climbers) starting with Issue #3, which features three mom climbers among other things. Read about Bobbi Bensman, Lynn Hill, and Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou (

Quiet the mind, discern the song
I started birding recently, though I have loved these tiny, melodic creatures since I first banded them in middle school. We’d set up nets before dawn, then come back in a few hours to find them filled with chickadees, robins, and other birds I quickly forgot the names of. Then we’d carefully...

New Stonewear Designs Blog & Feature Article on Arthritis & Running
I started working with one of my all-time favorite athletic wear companies, Stonewear Designs, about one month ago. My wardrobe has pieces that I purchased nearly a decade ago. So, lucky me, I now work for the company doing their social media, blogging, and e-newsletter (and subsequently get more...

How the stimulus funds helped me keep my house and start a small business
I almost lost everything, but the stimulus funds paid for the job that gave me the skills to start a new successful business. Poo-poo President Obama all you want, but it was because of his stimulus bill that I still own my home, have health insurance, and am happily employed.
My story…

Women’s Adventure magazine
Funny, I didn’t know that Women’s Adventure magazine quoted me in their December 16 Skills climbing article! Even funnier, I’m much more of a trad climber, yet they choose a quote about sport climbing and talked about me recommending the Red River Gorge (which I haven’t...

Blog: The San Rafael Swell, An Unfortunate Adventure
Climbing magazine recently published an article about the San Rafael Swell (February 2012). They asked me to write a short vignette about my experience, but they didn’t publish it. Here’s the untold story…

Blog: Ellis Delaney, folk musician, mother, philosopher…
Folk musician Ellis Delaney sat down with me for an hour during a break from performing at Planet Bluegrass’ Folks Fest, 2011. Ever eloquent and Buddhist-inspired, Ellis’ interviews always remind me that being here now is the best place to be. In this video interview, Ellis discusses how...

Blog: Malcolm Daly, entrepreneur, amputee, chef, visionary…
Malcolm Daly, 55, feeds his soul by feeding his friends—mole, paella, margs; sharing food is his favorite way to develop the sense of community he thrives on. Ever since two near-death experiences rocked his world in 1999 and 2004, Daly has gregariously shared his life and stories with others. These...

Blog: The Improbable Line, Lizzy Scully & Heidi Wirtz in Pakistan
Heidi Wirtz and Lizzy Scully traveled to Pakistan in 2006 to climb the Ogre’s Thumb on the Biafo Glacier. Due to various obstacles–an accident, rock fall, etc–the ladies failed in their endeavor. However, they learned a lot along the way, including what makes a good partner.

Blog: Heat, fire, enamel, jewelry: Marian Stonacek pursues her passion
Marian Stonacek grew up in a family of six self-reliant girls (and her father), all of whom knitted, crocheted, and were incredibly crafty. After all, growing up on a farm in Berthoud, Colo., meant all family members used their hands a lot.
“If we were self sufficient, we could fix the tractor,...

Blog: Yosemite adventure & disappointment
I read, with great interest, a recent post by my friend, writer Kelly Cordes. He traveled toPakistan on an expedition with Kyle Dempster and Hayden Kennedy. He discusses various details of life in basecamp and his bike excursion around Pakistan, but what struck me the most was this statement: “In...

Our Amazing Team
-

Writer & outdoor adventurer Lizzy Scully jumped into a print journalism career just out of graduate school. But within a few years she wanted to give back to some of the international communities she had visited, and so founded the nonprofit Girls Education International. There, she realized her passion for community building, which she achieved via traditional public relations avenues as well as through the use of online social media platforms. Lizzy & her staff now work with a half dozen businesses along the Front Range of Colorado.

Eve Hersh started out as an intern for Merge This Media, but that lasted just one month. This recent University of Colorado graduate has already become so key to the team that we asked her to work a more full-time schedule as our Communications Associate. Eve writes and edits blog posts, Facebook posts and tweets; she is spearheading the development of the Strategy of Engagement for Girls Education International; and she compiles the enewsletter for Experience Boutique, among other things. More about Eve to come…
